British properties, west vancouver, British Columbia
Built for an artist and their family this 7,000 square foot two storey timber and stucco residence sits on a beautiful sloping property amongst new botanical gardens. From the uphill side, the building nestles into the site with just the upper storey in view. Facing south both levels of the house have formative panoramas of English Bay and the city of Vancouver.
The formal entrance is through a grand rotunda gallery with a spiralling open stair and landing floor that is suspended from heavy timber trusses. This rotunda organizes levels of the house. On the ground floor is the studio opening onto the pool room and dining room and kitchen which also look into the enclosed swimming pool room. On the second floor private bedroom wings complete the ends of the house plan separated from the common area living room which is a central great lofted timber space.
The architecture of heavy rough timber columns and beams, the warm clay tile floors, stucco exterior and stone garden walls, in a contemporary manner reflect this clients South American roots.
